About Adelaide
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia, and as a city has the fifth largest population in Australia. As of June 2014, Adelaide's estimated resident population was 1.30 million. Adelaide is located north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, situated on the Adelaide Plains between the St Vincent Gulf and the Mount Lofty Ranges. Adelaide's ovall area stretches 20 km from the coast to the Adelaides foothills, and then 90 km from Gawler in the north, to Sellicks Beach in the south.
The city was named in honour of Queen Adelaide, wife of a reigning King William IV. Founded in 1836, Adelaide was a planned capital designed for a free settlers migrating to Australia. Adelaide founding fathers Colonel William Light, was responsible for the design of the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens. His city design for Adelaide was a grid layout, surrounded entirely by parklands, Adelaide was interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares. In the early days Adelaide was shaped by prosperity and wealth, so that up until the Second World War, it was Australia's third largest city. (more info)
